About hatred of Russians in Dota 2
Published on in category “gaming”
Russians are blamed in many things and games are no exception.
sometimes the accused is not Russian.
People see foreign language and immediately label it as Russian (it may be Ukrainian or Polish), but problem starts when the team starts losing because Russian is the perfect scapegoat since he can't even defend himself because he doesn't speak English.
It turns out that people remember only the bad Russians who ruined their games, forgetting about those Russians who won games.
This leads to following hasty generalization: all Russians that I've met ruined games which means all Russians ruin games. Which leads to interesting solution called "region lock" which is basically an iron curtain which was criticized a while ago.
In Dota 2 Russians are being blamed in playing on European servers. It is interesting that accusation is based on assumption that Russians chose servers where they don’t live and chose languages that they don’t speak.
- 40% of Europe territory is located in Russia and we are talking about European servers, not European Union servers.
- Russians live in European Union and in many other places
- there is a separate setting for a language
- Russian server is located in European Union so ping is not so different from nearby servers
Some people think that everyone must choose only one server that is closest to their location. This happens because there is an idea that server=language and if server is located in North America then everyone who joins such server must speak only English.
- there is a separate setting for language
- even if there is only one state language people may speak any language they want for example at Brighton beach people speak Russian
- there is an option to choose three servers at same time
Another accusation is communication problem but you can still communicate because there is chat wheel which translates a set of phrases in any language.
Speaking Russian with your friend or writing in chat often triggers hatred because people don’t understand that you are talking with your friend and not with them.
People think Russians are the problem and without them everyone shall be friendly. But problem is not citizenship it is matchmaking problem.
Situation gets worsened even by Russians, which tell foreigners that it is unreal to play on Russian server since there are Russians and they are terrible.
As a result not only foreigners hate Russians but also Russians hate foreigners.
